In Spain, bank accounts are available to both residents and non-residents, but when doing your banking in Spain, keep in mind that Spanish banks charge for most transactions. They can levy up to 0.5% 'receiving charge' with a same day Swift Payment, so if less urgent FC Exchange recommends using SEPA (2 day) payments when sending money to Spain, to ensure there are no bank charges, when your funds are received on the other side. You may also be hard-pressed to find a bank with English-speaking staff in some towns and cities, particularly out in the country.

When transferring money to Spain, the following payment details will be required:

  • The beneficiary's name (and address if possible)
  • The Spanish Bank you're paying into
  • IBAN (International Bank Account Number)
  • BIC (Bank Identifier Code) or SWIFT code

Within the IBAN number there are various codes, such as your bank branch and account numbers, and is used as standard when sending euro payments across Spain. Spanish IBANs consist of 24 characters, beginning with an 'ES' prefix followed by 22 characters. Many of our clients find our IBAN checker very useful.
